Welcome to OpenQR. OpenQR ("Service") is a video-first QR code platform that enables creators and e-commerce merchants to create instant Video QR Codes with built-in engagement analytics, community features, and content discovery.
This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use and share it, and your rights regarding your information. Our core philosophy is to be transparent, prioritize creator privacy, and collect only the data necessary to provide and improve our Service.
This policy covers three groups of people:
- "Creators": Individuals who create an account with OpenQR and upload videos or create QR codes.
- "Viewers": Individuals who scan a QR code or watch a video created by a Creator.
- "Explore Users": Individuals who discover and interact with public content in the Explore tab.
2. Information We Collect
We collect information in a few different ways to provide and improve our Service.
A. Information You Provide to Us (Creators)
- Account Information: When you register for an OpenQR account, we collect your email address and a hashed password. We use your email to communicate with you and to provide the Service.
- Video Content: You can upload videos to create Video QR Codes. We store your videos securely and process them for streaming. Videos are stored based on your content visibility settings (see Content Visibility below).
- Content Metadata: We collect information about your QR codes and videos, including titles, descriptions, destination URLs, and your chosen visibility settings (Private, Shareable Link, or Public).
- Community Engagement: If you comment on or like other creators' videos, we store this engagement data to power our community features.
- Billing Information: If you subscribe to a paid plan (available through in-app purchases on iOS and Android), we do not directly collect or store your credit card information. Payment processing is handled securely by Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
B. Content Visibility and Privacy Settings
Creators have full control over who can access their content:
- Private: Only you can view and manage your content. Default setting for all new uploads.
- Shareable Link: You can share a specific link with chosen people. The content does not appear in the Explore tab.
- Public: Your content is discoverable in the Explore tab by all users. You maintain full ownership and control.
C. Information We Collect Automatically (Viewers & Creators)
This is data collected automatically when you interact with our Service.
- Video View & Scan Analytics: When a Viewer watches a video or scans a QR code, we collect analytics to provide Creators with meaningful performance insights:
- IP Address: We collect the Viewer's IP address to determine general geographic location and to filter bot traffic using AI moderation.
- Location Data: From the IP address, we derive city and country data (never precise location).
- Device & Browser Information: Device type (mobile, desktop, tablet), browser, and operating system.
- Engagement Metrics: Timestamp, watch duration, heatmap data showing where viewers engage with videos.
- AI Content Moderation: For content security and community safety, we use AI-powered systems to scan videos and comments for inappropriate content, abuse, or violations. This helps protect all users and maintain a safe community. AI moderation operates at the content level only—we do not use this data to profile individual users.
- Bot Detection & Fraud Prevention: We use AI-powered bot detection to filter out fraudulent views and scans, ensuring analytics integrity. IP patterns, device fingerprinting, and behavioral signals are analyzed only for security purposes.
- Usage Information (Creators): We collect information about how you use the platform, such as login dates, videos created, and subscription tier, to operate the service and enforce tier limits.
3. How We Use Your Information
Our primary goal is to provide and improve our Service. We use the information we collect to:
- Provide Core App Functionality: We use your account information to authenticate you and provide access to the platform. We store and stream your videos, generate QR codes, and deliver the content you create.
- Power Analytics & Performance Insights: We use geographic location, device information, and engagement metrics from Viewers to provide Creators with detailed analytics about video performance, including heatmaps showing where viewers engage with content.
- Enable Community Features: We store and display comments, likes, and shares on videos to build community engagement. Your engagement data is associated with your Creator profile for transparency.
- Explore Tab & Content Discovery: For Creators who choose to make content Public, we use content metadata and engagement metrics to feature and recommend content in the Explore tab.
- AI Content Moderation & Safety: We use AI-powered systems to automatically scan videos and comments for inappropriate content, abuse, or violations. This protects the community and maintains a safe environment for all users. Moderation operates at the content level only.
- Bot Detection & Fraud Prevention: We use AI to identify and filter fraudulent views, spam accounts, and bot activity, ensuring the integrity and accuracy of analytics data.
- Process Payments: We use your email to manage your subscription for paid plans purchased through iOS and Android in-app purchases.
- Communicate with You: We may use your email address to send you important information about your account, community moderation actions, or Service updates.
4. How We Share Your Information
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information with any third parties for their marketing purposes.
We share information only in the following circumstances:
- Creator Analytics (Viewers' Data): The geographic location, device information, and engagement metrics collected from Viewers are shared exclusively with the specific Creator whose video was watched or QR code was scanned. Viewers' IP addresses and personal identifiers are never shared with Creators.
- Public Content & Explore Tab: Content you mark as "Public" is discoverable in the Explore tab by all users. Your Creator profile (name, profile picture, public bio) is visible alongside your public content.
- Community Engagement: Your comments, likes, and shares on other creators' videos are visible to other users to facilitate community interaction. Your identity is associated with this engagement.
- With Service Providers: We share information with third-party companies that help us operate our business, such as Cloudflare (for our database, video hosting, and infrastructure). These providers are contractually obligated to protect your data and can only use it to provide services to us. Payment processing is handled directly by Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
- For Legal Reasons: We may disclose your information if required to do so by law or in response to a valid request from a law enforcement or government agency.
5. Data Security and Retention
- Security Measures: We take data security seriously. We use industry-standard technical and administrative measures to protect your information, including:
- Passwords are hashed using secure algorithms, never stored in plaintext
- Video content is encrypted in transit and at rest
- Infrastructure is built on secure, modern cloud services (Cloudflare)
- AI moderation systems are isolated and operate only on content data
- Regular security audits and monitoring
- Video Retention: Videos are retained based on your account status:
- Active Accounts: Videos are retained as long as your account is active
- Inactive Accounts (Starter Tier): Videos are automatically deleted after 365 days of account inactivity
- Pro Tier: Videos are retained indefinitely with full control over deletion
- Deleted Content: When you delete a video, it is immediately removed from our systems within 24 hours
- Analytics Data Retention: Analytics data (scans, views, engagement) is retained based on your subscription tier:
- Starter Tier: 7 days of analytics retention
- Pro Tier: 2 years of analytics retention
- You can download or export your analytics data at any time
- Community Data Retention: Comments, likes, and shares are retained while the associated video is active. If you delete a video, all associated community engagement data is also removed.
- Moderation Data: AI moderation logs are retained for 90 days for security purposes and platform safety improvement, then automatically deleted.
- Account Data: We retain your Creator account information as long as your account is active. Upon account deletion, we remove your personal data within 30 days, except where legally required to retain records.
6. Your Rights and Choices
You have extensive rights over your personal information and content:
- Content Visibility Control: You can change your content visibility settings at any time. Make content Private, Shareable Link only, or Public directly in the app.
- Access Your Data: You can access all your personal information, videos, and analytics through your account dashboard. You can export or download all your data at any time.
- Update Information: You can update your email, profile information, and account settings at any time through the app.
- Delete Content: You can delete any video, QR code, comment, or engagement data you've created. Deleted content is removed within 24 hours.
- Delete Your Account: You can request permanent deletion of your account and all associated personal data. This will also delete all your videos, QR codes, and analytics. Contact us at the email below to request account deletion.
- Moderation Appeals: If your content is flagged by our AI moderation system, you will be notified with details about the flagged content. You can appeal moderation decisions by contacting us.
- Opt-Out of Analytics Sharing: For Pro tier users, you can request that specific types of analytics data not be displayed to your viewers (while still being collected for your reference).
7. Children's Privacy
Our Service is not directed to individuals under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, we will take steps to delete such information.
8. AI Moderation Transparency
We believe in transparent use of AI. Here's how our AI moderation works:
- Content Scanning: Our AI automatically scans videos and comments for inappropriate content, abuse, harassment, spam, and policy violations.
- No User Profiling: AI moderation operates at the content level only. We do not use moderation data to build profiles of users or their behavior.
- Human Review: Flagged content may be reviewed by our team for accuracy. We maintain a low false-positive rate.
- Notifications: If your content is flagged, you will receive a notification explaining why and what action was taken.
- Appeals Process: You can appeal any moderation decision within 30 days of the action.
- Data Deletion: Moderation logs and flagged content data are automatically deleted after 90 days.
9. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, or legal requirements. We will notify you of any significant changes by:
- Posting the new policy on this page with an updated "Last Updated" date
- Sending an email notification to Creators if the changes materially affect how we handle your data
- Requesting your explicit consent if changes significantly expand data collection or use
Your continued use of OpenQR after changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated Privacy Policy.
